Small molecules (Mw < 2000) is the ultimate downstream manifestation of genetic and protein (catalytic) activity. The quantitative and dynamic profiles of small molecules (metabolites) can therefore be used to link phenotypic information with upstream biology on the gene/protein level. Collectively, these metabolites are called the "metabolome" and metabolomics is the study of all small molecules present in a biological system such as a cell, tissue, organ, body fluid or whole organism.
